F rau Sturz, belustigt über ihres Mannes Unruhe, kaufte im Konsumverein' den kunstseidenen Schlips, den er erst zum Geburtstag hätte bekommen sollen; sie stärkte und plättete drei Vorhemdchen und etliche Paar Manschetten; sie bürstete den blauen Sonntagsanzug mit Benzin und packte einen Karton. Sturz nahm den ihm zustehenden Urlaub von zehn Tagen und erhielt einige, freilich unbezahlte, Tage mehr hinzubewilligt. Dreißig Mark holte er von der Sparkasse, für alle Falle und obwohl sie als Anzahlung auf eine Nähmaschine gedacht gewesen waren. Die Zeitschrift schickte das für die Hin- und Rückreise gültige Billettheft - und Sturz fuhr nach Tirol. Die Fahrt im Coupé zweiter Klasse gefiel ihm. Er rauchte Zehnpfennigzigarren, kaute Wurststullen, blinzelte vergnügt durchs Fenster, wippte auf den Polstern und pfiff. Später schlief er mehrere Stunden. In München stieg er um, schlief wieder ein, erwachte hinter Rosenheim und sah gerührt die ersten Berge. In Kufstein regnete es. Trotzdem ging er vor seinem Abteil des Zürich-Wien-Express', der ihn weiterbringen würde, stolz auf und ab, kletterte im letzten Augenblick in den Wagen und bedauerte, eine Stunde danach, dass er schon in K. angekommen war. Den Karton unterm Arm und den Hut zwischen den Fingern betrat er das Hotel. Der Portier nahm sich nicht die Mühe, seinen Schreck zu verbergen, als er hörte, wer dieser lächerlich grobe und schüchterne Mensch sei. Eilig ließ er ihn nach einem Zimmer des obersten Stockwerkes abschleppen und machte dem Direktor erschüttert Mitteilung, - Sturz kniff die Augen zusammen, während ihn der Boy durch die Halle führte. Herumsitzende Gäste musterten ihn, als sei er die Dame ohne Unterleib Im Lift fuhren sie hoch. Und nachdem sich der Junge zurückgezogen hatte, stand Sturz lange noch dicht an der Tür des Zimmers und wagte nicht, den Karton abzulegen. Eine Viertelstunde nach dem dritten Gongschlage klopfte es, und der Boy rief: man esse längst! Etwas später stand Sturz in einem großen, herrlich erleuchteten Saal. Die Herren trugen schwarze Anzüge und weißbrüstige Hemden; die Damen glichen nacktarmigen Fürstinnen. Sturz erhielt einen kleinen einsamen Tisch angewiesen; und bevor er sich setzte, verbeugte er sich dreimal linkisch ins Leere. Seine Verwirrung stieg, als man ihm das Vorgericht servierte. Er wusste mit den merkwürdig bunten Speisen nichts anzufangen und schlang sie hinunter, als fräße er Gift. Messer und Gabel klirrten in den sch weren Fäusten. Der Oberkellner studierte ihn süffisanten Blicks, und als Sturz das Messer aufs Parkett fiel, als er es aufhob und damit weiterspeiste, starrten ihn alle Gäste, unheimlich fremd und voll sachlicher Neugier, an. Mit gesenktem, rotem Kopfe saß er da und kaute. Ihm war todelend zumute, und verzweifelt schluckte er, was man ihm hinstellte. Als er schließlich aufzublicken wagte, war er allein. Sie quälten ihn voll böser Lust,; sie ertrugen es nicht, sein Herz auch nur eine Stunde unverletzt zu lassen; sie verbreiteten alle seine Irrtümer, damit man ihn verlache. Vom Zimmermädchen erfuhren alle, die es wissen wollten (und andere auch), Sturz halte die Tür zu seinem Badezimmer für eine nachbarlich verschlossene Tür und habe noch nicht gebadet. Der Oberkellner erzählte den Herrschaften, Sturz wage es nicht, Pasteten, Krebse, Geflügel und andere Gerichte zu essen, weil er nicht wisse, wie er sie anständig verzehren solle. Sogar beim Holzhacken habe er helfen wollen. Na, man habe ihm gründlich heimgeleuchtet! Seit seiner Ankunft hatte Sturz kaum ein Dutzend Worte gewechselt. Immer war er allein. Immer war er auf der Flucht vor dem Gelächter. Abzureisen freilich schämte er sich noch mehr .. So hastete er verlassen und verfolgt durch den lärm- und musikerfüllten Palast; und nur unterwegs, auf stillen Bergwegen und Gletschern gegenüber, fand er ein wenig Frieden. -Am zehnten Tage empfing er einen Brief von seiner Frau und sah am Datum, dass der Portier ihn mehrere Tage absichtlich zurückgehalten haben musste. Doch schwieg er, ging auf sein Zimmer und las, was sie ihm schrieb. An diesem Abend - die Hauskapelle spielte Tafelmusik weinte Sturz an seinem leeren, kleinen Tisch. Der Oberkellner kolportierte es schleunig und fügte anschaulich hinzu: die Tränen seien aufs Kalbsfrikassee getropft. Nervenkrisen eines Metallarbeiters wurden an etlichen Tischen für originell erklärt. Jetzt stellte er sich zur Verteidigung.Es verlangte ihn danach, zu beleidigen und zu bestrafen. Aber niemand verletzte ihn mehr.Es hatten wohl alle instinktiv begriffen, dass er sich geändert hatte. Auf der Bank des Ortes wechselte er fünfundzwanzig Mark in Schillinge um und bot - nachdem er seinen Karton gepackt hatte dem Zimmermädchen ein Trinkgeld. Sie drehte ihm den Rücken .. Er suchte den Hausdiener; dieser lachte ihm ins Gesicht und meinte, von so einem nehme er nichts .. Sturz lief zum Oberkellner und drückte ihm einige Scheine in die Hand. Der Oberkellner ließ das Geld fallen und wandte sich zum Gehen. Da hielt der Arbeiter es nicht mehr aus und schlug den Menschen nieder. - Kellner und Gäste liefen herbei und knieten sich zu dem Blutenden. Sturz drehte sich um. Man trat zurück und ließ ihn ungehindert passieren. An der Tür spieh er aus und warf den Rest des Geldes in den Saal. Dann ging er zum Bahnhof und fuhr heim. Wenige Wochen später starben der Arbeiter Sturz und seine Frau an Leuchtgasvergiftung?.
